About the Wine

2017 Domaine du Cellier aux Moines 'Les Pucelles' Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru $110
Les Pucelles is one of those vineyard sites in Burgundy that big time collectors fawn over. It is definitively a top site in Burgundy's famous Puligny Montrachet appellation, known the world over for making some of the best Chardonnays money can buy. We're flipping out at the opportunity to be able to offer one out below $150, so we think its a screamin' deal!

This vineyard is famous for the level of ripeness and minerality that their wines can achieve. Les Pucelles wines contain a nuttiness to their minerality, and aromatics that are hauntingly complex. This is the type of wine that contributes to Burgundy's claim of the finest white wines on the planet. This one is crafted by Domaine du Cellier Aux Moines, which was purchased almost 15 years ago by Philippe Pascal, the prior president of LVMH who started at the company in, you guessed it, their fine wines division. Going back to his roots, he could not resist buying this extraordinary property and maximize its true potential. Here, the commitment to quality is borderline obsessive as he even utilizes gravity vilification all the way into the bottle! This investment in the cellar allows a totally hands off approach which helps the wine retain all of its energy, freshness, and purity of fruit. Burgundy is not an area where it typically makes sense to invest huge sums of money into winery equipment, but when a producer does, the results are incredible! One more thing: his winemaker, Guillaume Marko, did his apprenticeship at Domaine de la Romanee Conti..

Tasting Notes: Domaine de Cellier's les Pucelles contains .27 hectares of vines located in the Clos des Meix (the heart of les Pucelles) adjacent to Bienvenues Batard Montrachet is composed of clay-limestone soils and planted in 1970. The wine sees 50% new oak for 20 months. It has a classic Puligny nose of smokey calcaire, gunmetal, subtle citrus, and floral aromas. Its sweet core of citrus and peachy apple fruit contains only a hint of vanilla, toast and oaky spices. The density is marvelous and it has exceptional concentration on the mid palate with intense mineral tension and smokiness extending through its long finish.
