Tasting Notes: 98-100 RP - 2018 La Chapelle Tasting Notes: Jaboulet's 2018 Hermitage La Chapelle features scents of crushed stone, violets and cassis. It's a classic trio, backed by a wine that's full-bodied, rich and powerful yet also airy, somehow carrying intense plum and black olive flavors without any sense of heaviness or excess weight. Then the wine finishes long and softly dusty, with tannins that accentuate its savory character, picking up delicious hints of licorice at the very end. The proportion of new oak has been trimmed back to a very reasonable 20% and is hardly noticeable in the wine.
2018 La Chapelle is a powerhouse of a wine that spews out room filling aromatics consisting of cassis, fresh herbs and running river. It just has so much character packed so densely into a full bodied frame. How the wine isn't too heavy is quite perplexing, but this is one of the most important attributes a world class full bodied wine must possess in ordered to receive that coveted 100 point score. This skyscraper of a wine epitomizes luxury, and the oodles of flavor and texture are literally out of this world. Caroline somehow crafted a wine of both immense subtlety and immense power simultaneously, so this isn't a wine a serious Rhone-loving collector can ignore!
Few wines can match the gravitas of Jaboulet's 'La Chapelle Hermitage.' This iconic site has boasted some of the best wines to be created in all of history! Caroline Frey, pictured above, has been the owner/winemaker here since 2006 and has undoubtedly restored the quality of this renowned estate not only to past glory, but to new heights. In part by her converting the vineyard and winemaking to Biodynamic, and in part because of all of the hard work this talented winemaker does in the vineyard and in the cellar, this is again one of the absolute best wines produced in the world today. In addition to Jaboulet, Caroline also owns the classified Bordeaux Chateau in the Medoc - La Lagune. Caroline will only be releasing her 2018 wines once for 10 whole years, and that window closes Thursday evening, so if you would like me to order you some of these gems, please act quickly as 2018 La Chapelle is already quite famous, and demand will surely outstrip the limited supply!
