2018 Odette Chardonnay Reserve Napa Valley 750ml
The 2018 Chardonnay Reserve has a compelling nose of ripe Golden Delicious apples, pear tart and fresh grapefruit with nuances of marzipan, allspice and shaved ginger. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated and bursting with baked apples and spiced pears flavors, supported by a refreshing line and a lovely satiny texture, finishing long and layered. 93 Points RP
This wine is crafted from the famed Hudson Ranch off of Henry Road in the Carneros AVA of Napa Valley. 2018 marks the first year with the addition of Block 6S paired with our select rows in Block 5BS. This unique new block planted in sandy soil, adds to
the overall depth and complexity bringing verve and energy to the palate. The adjacent blocks are both planted to Odette Estate Winemaker Jeff Owens’ favorite clone, “old shot wente”, also referred to as “chicks and hens”.
Slow and steady wins the race. The growing season commenced later but remained consistent throughout the year. 2018 was one of the coolest vintages that we’ve come across in recent years with a drop of nearly 15% in growing degree days from the very hot 2017 vintage. Fortunately Mother Nature was kind and allowed us to hang these two blocks until the beginning of October. A lot of patience paid great dividends in this vintage.
FERMENTATION & AGING
The grapes were handpicked at night and arrived at the winery before the sun came up to ensure that fruit purity, aromatics and freshness were retained. Both blocks were 100% whole cluster pressed on a very gentle four-hour cycle. The juice was immediately racked to French Oak barrels where both native primary and malolactic fermentation took place for fifteen weeks. The wine was sur lie aged for 16 months before racking for bottling. Each barrel was kept separate and treated as an individual lot until selected for the final blend just before March.
The 2018 Odette Reserve Chardonnay is 100% barrel fermented in 80% new
French Oak and sur lie aged for 16 months on its lees. Extremely slow, cool, native fermentations contributed to the purity of fruit, elegance and true expression of this site. Appealing now but worthy of aging, this “old shot wente” selection offers notes of stone fruits, lemon zest, beeswax, apple blossoms and jasmine, framed by stunning freshness and a gorgeous texture.
